VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

318 OPEN WHEEL MODIFIEDS

 

            (1)        VEHICLE DESCRIPTION:

(A)  This class is a low cost open wheel class that uses readily available production components in construction.

(2)               ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN:

(A)  The maximum displacement 323 ci.

(B)  Flat top pistons, flat tappet cams only.

(C)  No rollerized valve train

(D)  1 (one) 2-barrel carburetor with a maximum throttle bore of 1 11/16 inches.

(E)   Must be naturally aspirated.

(F)   Single or dual plane manifolds O.K.

(G)  No Fuel Injection

(H)  No purpose built race engines, i.e. Indy, etc.

(I)     No mid engine or rear engine vehicles. No all wheel drive or front wheel drive.

(J)    No electronic traction control devices allowed. 

(K) Heads and block shall be cast iron and shall have OEM casting numbers. V6 motors can run aluminum OEM heads block must be cast iron

(L)   Heads shall be as delivered from factory with no modifications.  No porting, profiling or polishing whatsoever.  Minimum combustion chamber area is 60 c.c.

(M)   A maximum one (1) inch spacer/adapter allowed.

(N)    Number one (1) spark plug shall be not more than twelve (12) inches behind spindle centerline.

(O)    Engine offset must be kept within two (2) inches of centerline of original frame.

(P)      Single cam only.

(Q)    Cooling system may be modified. Any overflow tubes must be directed to the ground, between frame rails. Radiators to be mounted in front of engine.

(R)  Transmission must have at least one gear forward and one reverse, plus a neutral position.  Only OEM production type transmissions will be allowed, three speed, four speed, five speed or automatic.

(S)      No 'in and out' boxes or quick-change devices allowed.

(T)   All manual transmissions must have a working single disc-type clutch with an all steel flywheel.

(U)  Automatic transmissions must remain in OEM stock automatic case with a functional torque converter.

(V)  Original bell housing must remain.

(W)      Must have an approved scatter shield or blanket. Scatter shield shall be constructed of not less than quarter-inch by three-inch steel, 270 degrees around flex plate or flywheel. Any production OEM rear end may be used.  No purpose built racing rear ends allowed. Must be semi-floating. Lockers are allowed.

(X) **Must be solid straight drive shaft.

            (3)        BODY AND FRAME:

(A)  Body must resemble production vehicle.

(B)  Roof may be narrowed to allow the body to be within three (3) inches of the frame on each side, measured at 90 degrees to the bottom of the frame.                                              

(C)  Body shall be enclosed at the rear of the vehicle.

(D)  Driver seat from furthest most right side edge must measure no more than 6” from center of driveshaft.

(E)   Engine compartment will remain open, no side panels; hood sides may have a maximum two (2) inch drop, shall not extend above hood mounting point more than two (2) inches, and must be enclosed at rear.  

(F)   Maximum hood scoop height six (6) inches.    

(G)  Minimum 18 gauge steel firewall and steel floor mandatory.    

(H)  The body may be channeled over the frame.     

(I)     Complete OEM frames must be a production mini or mid size truck or van frame originally equipped with rear leaf spring suspension.

(J)    96” wheel base minimum

(K) Frame rails may be cut and shortened to shorten wheelbase but must be same length.

(L)   Can cut max 8” from cross member to narrow frame.

(M)   No offset frames.

(N) Right and left side-wheel base shall be within one (1) inch of each other.  

(O) Removal of frame behind rear most suspension mount is allowed.

(P)   No part of the racecar can be lower than four (4) inches from the ground.

(Q)    No wings

(R)     Max spoiler height 6” as measured from deck up.

            (4)        SUSPENSION & STEERING

(A)  Front suspension type must be OEM as delivered with frame and must be replaceable by stock parts.

(B)  Mounting points may be moved.

(C)  Shock mount location is open.

(D)  No fabricated spindles.

(E)   Spindles can be ground for brake caliper clearance only.

(F)   If used, front sway bar must be approved OEM.

(G)  Suspension, steering, and rear-end parts must be steel.

(H)  Any make production rack & pinion allowed.

(I)     Steel steering shafts and knuckles only.

(J)    In-cockpit steering may be modified to suit driver's taste, but must be kept between frame rails.

(K) Steering quickeners are allowed.

(L)   No devices allowed that would enable driver adjustment to alter wheelbase or for weight jacking while car is in competition.

(M) OEM auto or truck leaf springs must be used in rear suspension as intended by frame manufacture. Mounting points may be changed.

(N)  Rear leaf springs must be able to support car.

(O) Spring sliders ok

(P)   Non adjustable tubular upper control arms OK.

(Q) Right and left side lower control arms must be same length.

(R)  No air shocks or air bags allowed.

(S)   One shock per wheel only.

(T)   No remote adjustable shocks.

(U)  Two coil-over’s per car.

(V)  Brakes are open as long as spindles are OEM.

(W)   Brakes are required on at least 3 wheels and may be converted to disc.

(X)  Heim joints allowed only in steering shaft supports and shocks, torque arm and pan hard bar.

(Y)  Weight Jacks O.K.

            (5)        TIRES AND WHEELS:

(A)  Tires must be DOT radials. No re-treads.
